I'm still not sold that branding off your name is the best move forward at least in blogging. I don't think most people have a strong enough name recognition, and it kind of limits the ability to scale out.

Like anything there are different views though, and I'm always a fan of staying true to yourself. When you're not geniune is when you get in trouble.

You are both right. If you are producing a solid product, or a large number of products with a majority of winners, then name recognition is a very good thing. The Billy Mays example is a classic one. On the other hand, if your product is garbage, then Nick is right. For example, consider a product connected to Vanilla Ice or Milli Vanilli.

The same argument could be made for a brand that does not include a name, so I would challenge (again) it's not a question of marketing. Companies in the United States have the best marketing talent anywhere. They will easily sell you things that you do not want or need. The problem is simply that the quality control is not present.

I disagree that using your name as a brand is bad. Look at Billy Mays for a good example. He begins every commercial with "Hi, Billy Mays here for...". His name is the brand. Take Goldman Sachs or any other famous investment/legal/accounting firm. Using a person's name is a proven, successful branding strategy.
