Messaging and Positioning for you

If you missed the M&P post please catch up before continueing, it can be found here.

Messaging (pulled from my resume):

Experienced, well-rounded Product Manager, having demonstrated high performance throughout all phases of a product launch. With a five year track record of exceeding expectations and taking on increasingly larger scale projects and responsibilities.*

Pillars

  • Experienced
  • Performer
  • Wholistic
Experienced Performer Wholistic
4 product launches Increased Revenues 83% Sales
Managed accounts Exceeded metrics by 300% Product Management
Internal project management Expanded programs to 12 countries Licensing
Web & traditional media Record revenues Operations

These map to a variety of job titles I’ve held: Product Manager, Marketing Specialist, Storage Development Specialist, Merchandising Associate, Purchasing Operations Specialist, and Account Executive.

By utilizing this approach I was able to tell a consistent experience with very disparate job history. Tying past successes to my current career path giving a compelling story rather than one where I’d have to write off some skills as not/applicable or merely cross functional.

Take-Aways: Whether it’s a product or you; accurate and compelling M&P creates a more attractive product offering. You can bridge gaps by bundling under traits under a pillar that hints at the real importance of the trait to the desired end product.
